The diminishing returns manifesto

Look after your gut. Cover the basics. Then optimise for fun.

  1. 1The gutRaw kombucha, most days. Kev's daily habit since he swapped out the wine.
  2. 2The basicsOlive oil, fibre, creatine. Boring. Brilliant. No 20-supplement stack.
  3. 3The funEverything after that is diminishing returns. Go and enjoy yourself.
Show me the science
  • Your gut's trillions of microbes are linked to heart health, blood sugar, inflammation and weight. ZOE's scientists studied over 34,000 guts and found 50 bacteria linked to better health.
  • In a Stanford trial, ten weeks of having more fermented stuff every day boosted gut diversity and cut 19 markers of inflammation.
  • Around 7,000 steps a day was linked to a 47% lower risk of death from any cause compared with 2,000 steps, with modest extra gains beyond that.
  • Benefits from exercise level off at roughly three to five times the NHS minimum.

What kombucha actually does

Three plain facts. No lab coat, no beige linen.

  1. 1

    It's alive

Raw kombucha is fermented and unpasteurised, so it carries live bacteria and yeasts. Heat-treated stuff doesn't.

    Show me the science

Kombucha is made by fermenting sweet tea with a SCOBY, a culture of bacteria and yeasts. Raw, unpasteurised kombucha keeps those cultures alive. Pasteurising kills them.

  2. 2

    Fermented stuff adds variety

A 2021 Stanford study found that more fermented stuff every day, kombucha included, made the mix of bacteria in people's guts more varied.

    Show me the science

36 healthy adults spent ten weeks on a high-fermented or a high-fibre diet. Microbiome diversity went up in the fermented group, and 19 markers of inflammation went down.

Source: Wastyk et al., "Gut-microbiota-targeted diets modulate human immune status", Cell, 2021.

  3. 3

    It's not magic

It won't cure anything. It's a good daily habit, not a pill. Anyone promising more is selling jade eggs.

    Show me the science

Most research on kombucha itself is in the lab or in animals, with only a few small studies in people. So treat it as a decent daily habit, not a treatment.

“Wow! It's incredible here! ... Kombucha on tap... yes please! Felt like an experience coming here, the owner took us on a kombucha journey, and wow is the kombucha delicious! It tastes nothing like the supermarket kombuchas, there's a real depth of flavour that's been brewed and fermented! ... Worth a 2 hour drive here! Highly HIGHLY recommend!”

“I've tried kombucha from the supermarket before, but this is so much better. I really enjoyed the kombucha on tap. The shop/bar has a relaxed and welcoming vibe. I had a couple of glasses whilst in the bar and bought a couple of bottles to take away. I will definitely be returning.”

“Fantastic business - we popped in for a quick drink mid morning. Lovely atmosphere, the owner was incredibly welcoming and the selection of kombucha was fantastic - we had an elderflower and raspberry and a scotch bonnet kombucha each and spent a lovely half an hour enjoying them - highly recommend”
